Walking Art: The Alternative Limb Project

Art takes on many forms; have you ever thought that a part of the body can also become a work of art?

Sophie de Oliveira Barata, originally from the UK, was a prosthetics maker for film. However, her growing interest in the medical field led her to hope to apply her professional skills in a more meaningful and challenging way—creating medical prosthetics.

From fingers to toes, Sophie seemed to be doing the same type of prosthetic work, but her audience shifted from film actors to individuals with disabilities. As she interacted with more prosthetic users, she wondered if she could create prosthetics that were not only comfortable and functional but also creatively designed.

To realize this vision, Sophie founded "The Alternative Limb Project" in 2011, aiming to create prosthetics that embody these characteristics. By infusing the aesthetics and sci-fi elements of film into her prosthetics, each piece becomes a walking work of art, truly astonishing. She takes the time to understand her clients' desires and preferences, incorporating materials like crystals and intricate patterns to ensure each prosthetic is unique. Now, she continues to create more artistic and functional prosthetic works as a prosthetic artist.

Wearing a prosthetic produced by "The Alternative Limb Project," users can embrace their individuality without fear of judgment, as each movement they make is akin to a piece of art, embodying a free spirit.
